Job Hunt
Foundations for the Job Hunt
In this assignment, you’ll be turning in one (1) single document with screenshots of 3 different tasks:
1.) A Google Jobs Alert for any search term you’d like
2.) Your completed account on any one (1) of the following websites:
– Guru.com
3.) A reach-out message to any hiring manager, either via:
-the job application process on one of the above-mentioned sites, or
-as a cold email to a client you’d like to work with (for help with this, review document 2.2, template #4 from last week’s Tyrus template packet)
To take a screenshot:
Mac: Press command+shift+4, then trace a box around the section you’d like to screenshot. A picture file will appear on your desktop.
Windows: Press Windows+shift+S. Click and drag on your screen to select the part of your screen you want to capture. A screenshot of the screen region you selected will be copied to your clipboard. You can paste it in any application by selecting Edit > Paste or pressing Ctrl + V, just as you’d paste a full-screen shortcut taken with the Print Screen key.
Step 1. Navigate to google.com and search for any job type in the following format “[Search term] jobs near [City], [State].
Step 1.2 Press “Alerts” at the top right corner of the page
Step 1.3 Enter your email address and select a frequency for your job alerts.
Step 1.4 Don’t forget to take your screenshot and paste it into your submission document.
Step 2. Navigate around the following sites (- Upwork.com – Linkedin.com – Guru.com – Freelancer.com – Workaway.info – Monster.com – Indeed.com) and decide on which one you’d like to create an account.
Please, if you already have an account on one or more of these sites, create an account on a site you don’t already have. It’s a little annoying, especially if you’re not sure about the site, but this is a great opportunity to check out a new resource—and you’ll thank me if you ever get a job hit from it.
Step 2.2 Set up your account completely. This step will take a little bit of time.
Step 2.3 Don’t forget to take your screenshot and paste it into your submission document.
Step 3. Send your “reach-out message.” This can be an actual submission of your résumé and a cover letter via any of the career sites, or it can be an application for a particular gig on Upwork, Guru, Freelancer or Workaway (these are a particularly good idea if you’d like a lower stakes reach-out), or it can be a cold email (as mentioned above: for help with this, review document 2.2, template #4 from last week’s Tyrus template packet)
Step 3.2 Don’t forget to take your screenshot and paste it into your submission document.
Step 4. Save your document and submit it!
